ABB
ABB E-MOBILITY is a sustainable packaging system developed for ABB, designed to align the delivery experience of electric vehicle chargers with the brand’s technological leadership in smart mobility and electrification. The project enabled ABB to transform packaging from a logistical necessity into a strategic asset, reducing global transport costs, eliminating plastic waste and reinforcing its positioning as a sustainability-driven technology leader. By rethinking packaging as part of the product experience, ABB strengthened both operational efficiency and brand coherence across international markets.
At IDEA Design Strategic Hub, we approached the project by treating packaging as an engineering system rather than a graphic layer, integrating structural performance, logistics optimization and installer-centric usability into a single, plastic-free solution.

ENGINEERING PACKAGING AS A LOGISTICS SYSTEM
IDEA Design engineered the packaging as a structural solution. All polystyrene foams (EPS) were replaced by advanced corrugated cardboard architectures, with internal ribs and programmed deformation zones designed to absorb impacts and protect electronics during transport.
Component layout was redesigned to eliminate unused air inside the box, significantly reducing overall volume and increasing the number of units per pallet and container, directly lowering transport emissions. Installer workflows were carefully analyzed, transforming the packaging into an installation organizer that presents components in the exact order of use, reducing errors and on-site installation time.
A clean, functional design language reinforced ABB’s premium brand perception, ensuring that sustainability and robustness were communicated from the very first physical interaction.
